The next episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres tonight on HBO and HBO Max. However, what some fans may not realize is that the episode also serves as the Season 1 finale of the latest Game of Thrones spinoff.

Season 1 consists of just six episodes, which is a significantly shorter run compared to HBO's previous Westeros-set series, House of the Dragon, which debuted with 10 episodes in its first season in August 2022.

In a January 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Ira Parker explained that the reduced episode count ultimately benefited the series and the type of story they wanted to tell.

"The biggest thing that was very helpful was learning the show didn't have to be 10 episodes, one hour each. Being able to do six episodes, anywhere between 30 or 40 minutes, was perfect for us," he said.

According to Parker, the six-episode season allowed the creative team to deliver a more faithful adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg fantasy novellas, which serve as the inspiration for the series. The show chronicles the adventures of the courageous hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his intelligent young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), as they journey across Westeros while Egg trains to become a knight.

"This way, the stuff we did add doesn't feel tangential," Parker continued. "It feels like it's filling out these novellas in a way that hopefully George would have done if he had just written them as novels instead of 80-page nuggets."

What Happened In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Episode 5?

The penultimate episode, "In the Name of the Mother," is one of the most brutal and eventful episodes of the season and focuses on the Trial of Seven.

Ser Duncan the Tall faces off against Prince Aerion Targaryen after being accused of assaulting a member of the royal family and abducting Prince Aegon. Aerion invokes the ancient trial by combat and calls for a Trial of Seven, recruiting six champions to fight on his behalf. Dunk must also find six knights willing to stand beside him as well.

While the battle ultimately ends in Dunk's favor, his victory comes at a devastating price. The episode concludes with the shocking death of Prince Baelor Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne, who is struck by his brother Prince Maekar Targaryen's mace during the fight and suffers a fatal head injury.

According to HBO's preview, Baelor's death will shape the events heading into the finale. "As Ashford mourns a great loss, Dunk considers his next move...and whether to keep Egg as his squire," the synopsis for Episode 6 reads.
