Courteney Cox isn't keeping beauty secrets.
The actor, director and Homecourt founder says that when it comes to what daughter Coco, 21, has learned from her, it's been about what's on the inside, not the outside.
"First of all, we got matching tattoos," Cox begins. "Probably not a thing that mothers and daughters are supposed to do, but we've got a tattoo that says, 'Lead with the truth.' She takes away just being really honest. It's always easier. If you do not tell the truth, somehow it'll come back to you."
Cox's approach to aging in the public eye is a reflection of that belief.
In 2017, almost a decade before most celebrities talked openly about treatments, Cox opened up about dissolving her filler. When asked what inspired her candor at the time, her answer was as candid as they get.
"I think that people were talking about me [then], and they still do. The world's not that nice. There's always someone who's going to look for something negative or say, 'What happened to her?' or 'I remember when she was ...' Look, we're getting older. That's just the way life goes," she shares.
The star says while using filler, she didn't realize she'd taken it "too far."
"I didn't know. [But] you have friends that go, 'Babe, did you put filler here?' And then I'm like, 'Well, I don't think so. I might have put it here, but it's not there. I didn't do that.'"
Cox, now 61, says that when she dissolved as much filler as she possibly could, "I started to look more like myself, and that, I think, was key. I just didn't realize."
Cox says that Coco also knows "less is more."
"I think that's important," she continues.
There's one more thing Coco is aware of from watching her mom: "I think that she sees how important our teeth are; you only get one set."
The star learns beauty tips from her daughter, too.
Cox previously told PEOPLE that Coco taught her how to wear blush. “I thought blush was over here,” Cox says, gesturing to her cheekbones, “and it’s really more on the apples of your cheek.”
She says her daughter also has a great visual sense, and the star leaned into it for her first foray into bodycare with the Cocomoi collection, which the mother and daughter created together.
Coco came up with the mood board for the campaign after Cox gave her “some adjectives.”
“I said, ‘I want the smell of coconut, obviously, and I want it to feel wet, but I want it to not be a summer thing. And, it’s got cedarwood, so I want it to feel woodsy.’ I gave her those three things, and she goes, ‘Got it. Leave me alone. I’ve got it.’”
Cox continues,“She came up with something incredible.”
In April, Cox launched her exfoliating hand wash in her signature scent Cece. It was the result of another learning from the founder.
“I wanted to do an exfoliating hand wash because I don’t think people think about their hands as much as they should and as much as I wish I did when I was younger,” she told PEOPLE.
“When you exfoliate, it helps other products absorb into your skin. I dry-brush before I put my body cream on every day, so this is something I wish I’d used a long time ago. That and sunscreen.”
